Using ALSA equalizer plugin with line in to line out

I have added the driver to /boot/config.txt per instructions in another post and have set alsamixer to use bypass. I want to use the alsa equalizer plugin. It is installed and I can see it with alsamixer -D equal but the controls don't seem to do anything. I have the input coming through the rca inputs and using headphones on the headphone jack. The sound is coming in and I can hear through the headphones.
