Volume Control

Hi,
I've got the card set up and getting audio out. Is there a way to control the volume in software instead of only using the knobs? Using AlsaMixer I've only been able to mute the audio output but don't seem able to lower/raise the volume.
A smaller concern is that the connection is not very secure. Slight movement can cause the cable to disconnect from the card.
