Rpi + injector for spectrum analysis - advice?

Post by kallikak » Fri Apr 13, 2018 12:29 pm

Hello,

I just bought a Raspberry pi 3 and have been very impressed.

Now, one hobby project of mine is analysing piano strings and tunings and I have written quite a sophisticated iPhone app for this purpose. However, I am pretty sick of the constant updates to iOS and XCode etc, plus the closed system, and also one of the major limiting factors is the 48KHz sampling frequency. So when I started using my Rpi, I thought why look for an audio input board and try porting my code to this device?

With this in mind, I'd be quite keen to try one of the audio injector boards at 96kHz. I have no need of audio out for this project - I am purely concerned with capturing played notes. I perform a rolling FFT on the input, analyse it using the physics of stiff strings, and get estimates of the frequency of the notes, the various harmonics, some physical properties etc.

I would like advice on which board would suit best. The minimalism of the zero looks good, but are there components already installed on the stereo board that will make it a better match? I would want to use the on-board microphone - the zero doesn't provide one right?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give,

Ken

Hi there,

Sounds like fun - spectral analysis.

The Zero does come with a microphone, however you need to solder it in place. If you don't want to solder, then you can use the original stereo sound card which is all set up for you.
