channel separation problem

I'm using the ALSA interface to only record input from the RIGHT input channel and when I connect audio to the LEFT input jack and have nothing plugged into the RIGHT jack the data I collect sounds just fine. Is there some way to setup the mixer so that audio from the left channel isn't mixed into the right channel?
