Recommended ALSA setup for 96kHz playback?

A pretty basic question - sorry!

Could you explain the best practice so I can play a 96kHz stereo file using aplay? My understanding is that out-of-the-box ALSA supports a maximum of 48kHz.

I received a 'format not supported' error when I tried to play a sample 24/96 file with aplay; the same file played just fine with omxplayer.

Can you please tell me the output of the command aplay -vv fileName ?
