Detect External Input

Hi all,

is it possible to check to see if there is a device connected to the RCA inputs? i'd like to immediately start to record the input when there is a device connected, but otherwise be playing music via the output. I was thinking maybe the info is buried somewhere in the /proc/ directory, but I've had no luck so far.
